Flank Steak Questions

Last night Alex BBQed some flank steak. The girls really liked it - yay. (It is just so much more satisfying to hear "Mom we love this" than "I don't want it" - sorry Mom to all those dinner battles.) As many of you know, I am not a big vegetable eater. My girls however do pretty good with veggies and we have actually have to say sometimes the "Eat 2 more pieces of meat and then you can have some more broccoli". We call everything "meat" as to postpone the meat = dead cute animals talk.

Anyway after eating the flank steak and saying how much she liked it, Rachel became quiet and then asked, "Does meat come from fish?" Alex said "No honey it comes from cows." So Rachel followed up with "How does the cow give meat?" thinking about cows make her milk. Okay so we are there now explaining that the cow is killed and we are eating it. Then Rachel asked if the cow knew it was getting killed. After I told her that the cow didn't know, I took a deep breath and waited. Finally Rachel said "I love eating cow!"

Yay Homework

Filling out this form was Rachel's first homework assignment in her Room 5 Junior Kindergarten class. And practicing your name was done in class. What a easy grader- Rachel forgot to do lowercase letters.

Stories from the Farm

We went to local farm for a birthday party last weekend where the main attraction (besides the cake, games, and pinata) was goat milking. Rachel told me before the party that she was not interested in touching a goat. Lauren would not commit either way. Rachel loved the instructor and wanted to participate so she volunteered to dry the udders after Teacher Sam washed them with an iodine solution. And because of the towel, Rachel didn't have to actually touch the goat.

When Teacher Sam started milking the goat everyone was quiet and watching intently. Then Lauren asked me loudly, "Is the goat peeing?" Everyone laughed (including Lauren) and Teacher Sam explained again about goat milk. I was holding Lauren and walked over to the goat pen for a closer look. Unfortunately, the closest goat happened to sneeze right when we were peering into the pen, Lauren got scared and wanted nothing else to do with the goats.

Pretend School

The girls are writing in their tiny notebooks, very seriously, out in our front yard and on the couch.

Why aren't they all called "ring finger"?
